Fighting resumed yesterday in the North of Abyei killing seven police one month after the Miseriya and the Ngok Dinka signed a ceasefire in Kadugli.

SLPA spokesperson Colonel Philip Aguer Panyang told SCR News over the phone that Popular Defense Forces (PDF) militias together with some Miseriya tribesmen attacked yesterday the North of Abyei killing seven police officers.

He added that the clashes resumed today and the militias overrun 30 policemen and took the locality of Todath in North Abyei.

Col. Aguer said the attacks represent a violation of the Kadugli ceasefire and called upon the UN Mission in the Sudan (UNMIS) to monitor the border and find out who is violating the peace.

He added that it is up to GoSS President Salva Kiir Mayardit to call on President Omar Hassan al Bashir to negotiate a permanent peace for the region since Abyei falls under the Office of the Presidency.

Fr. Peter Suleiman, the catholic parish-priest of Abyei, confirmed the attack and the number of yesterday’s casualties over the phone.

He added that although the market was operating in Abyei town, residents were fearful and staying indoors.
