AFRICAN UNION APPLAUDS SUCCESSFUL REFERENDUM

The head of the African Union congratulated the Sudanese for the referendum on self-determination for South Sudan, saying that Sudan has overcome its tragic history of division and its exceptional legacy inherited from its past.

Jean Ping praised the leadership provided by Omar Hassan al-Bashir and Salva Kiir Mayardit together with the extraordinary efforts by the referendum commission led by Mohammed Ibrahim Khalil and his deputy Chan Reec Madut.

He added that the referendum was conducted in a timely, credible and peaceful manner.

Mr. Pin urged the governments in Khartoum and Juba to agree on all post?referendum issues necessary for the establishment of two viable and mutually supportive states with the AU Panel’s support led by former President Thabo Mbeki.
