The European Union has welcomed the results of referendum for the independence of South Sudan.
Catherine Ashton, Head of EU’s Foreign Policy, said the Union will continue to push for democracy and human rights in the north and the south.Ms. Ashton said that the referendum was a historic moment for Sudan.
She added despite many obstacles, the referendum authorities were able to organize a referendum in a timely and credible manner witnessed by the EU observation mission.
The Declaration of Independence of the Republic of South Sudan is expected to take place on July 9 when the CPA interim period expires.
