The authorities of Lou area, in Jonglei State, urged the government to provide security to the population and disarm youths that have killed scores and stole thousands of cattle since last November.
The commissioners of Uror, Tut Puok Nyang, and Akobo, Goi Jooyul, told the press today that heavily armed Murle youths from the Kongor section of Nanam River have killed some 20 people, abducted a few children and stole 2,600 cattle since November.The last attack took place two days ago in Pamai Village of Uror County. A number of people were killed including the county chief and his deputy, and the raiders stole 800 cows.
The two commissioners asked the government and the state to disarm the youth and provide protection to the population.
Mr. Puok said the youths attack in great numbers and then break up into small units of five up to 30 members to raid for children and cattle.
He said the people of Lou area were disarmed and if they are not protected from the raiders they will rearm.
The two commissioners said they were not targeting the Murle community in general, but a group of youths from Nanam River who are roaming freely spreading death and fear through the Lou area.
