Health authorities have charted out health facilities in south Sudan using the Global Positioning System known as GPS to pinpoint clinics, hospitals and other health structures.
Health Undersecretary Olivia Lomoro yesterday told SCR News that her ministry has mapped already all health facilities in nine states in order to locate areas that need health coverage.She said that there are about 1,300 health facilities in south Sudan, including teaching, state and county hospitals, and primary health care centres and units.
Dr. Lomoro said right now her staff is finishing the mapping of Jonglei state to complete the survey.
She explained that the mapping is a very important exercise because it identifies where health services are needed.
Dr. Lomoro said that the mapping was key for strategic health planning.
She added that health partners will be asked to target areas not yet covered by the health services and facilities instead of operating where they want.
