Citizens of Eastern Equatoria state are suggesting Torit to be the host city for the independence celebration of South Sudan.
MPs Anisia Karlo Achieng and Flora Saloma are among several people who say Torit should host the independence because it was the birthplace of the liberation struggle, Emmanuel Radio reported.Deputy speaker Paul Napwon challenged south Sudanese to heed their history and give honour to the architectures of the freedom struggle by marking the first celebration of the nation in Torit.
MP Dominic Otwari equally supported his colleagues and suggested to rename Torit as Liberation city.
State governor Louis Lobong Lojore urged Eastern Equatoria citizens to continue lobbying the government of South Sudan and the entire citizens of the new nation to accept holding the first celebrations in Torit.
The first bullet of South Sudan liberation struggle was shot in Torit in 1955.
