United Nations Children’s Fund or UNICEF and Torit Ministry of Education are training data collection assistance to assess the experiences and challenges girls undergo during menstruation in schools.
The one week training aims at equipping data assistance with knowledge on how to research on social, cultural and environmental factors affecting school girls during menstruation.
Speaking to Radio Emmanuel, Amania Gloria Amule a consultant for Menstrual Hygiene Management says the training is a joint task with the ministry of education to assess the needs of girls in schools.
She adds the data to be collected will be used by the ministry of education and health to influence policies for improvement on girl’s education in future.
The consultant explains that two schools chosen from rural and urban setting will be used as case study for the project.
A research done in the country shows poor menstrual hygiene management that includes limited access to sanitary pads and lack of WASH facilities reduce girl’s self-confidence, and concentration in school during menstruation.
According to UNICEF similar activity is taking place across the three regions of South Sudan.
