Lakes Governor congratulated voters in the State for turning out massively on the first day of polling and expressed hope that the referendum process will be smooth.

Speaking to Good News Radio moments after voting at Rumbek’s Freedom Square, Chol Tong Mayay said that he had done rounds in six polling centres and observed that the turnout was “impressive”.

He congratulated all those Southern Sudanese who have turned out to vote, citing the President of Southern Sudan, Salva Kiir Mayardit.

Governor Chol reassured Lakes inhabitants of security during the referendum process, saying security officers have already been deployed in all the polling centres and that there is a back up security team yet to be commissioned.

He further said that he will continue doing rounds in polling centres, including the centre at Rumbek Central Prison.

There was a high turnout on the first day of voting in virtually all polling centres in Lakes State with some voters freely expressing their excitement and enthusiasm that saw women sing and dance at many polling stations.
