Attacks on the Sudan People’s Liberation Army in Unity State and Abyei areas will not affect the conduct of the Southern Sudan referendum, said a UN official.

The Representative of the United Nations Secretary General to Sudan Haile Mankorios made this statement on Sunday during a tour of referendum centres in Torit town, Emmanuel Radio reported.

Mr. Haile said the international community continues to monitor the matter, trying to help the police and the armed forces into ensuring that the situation remains normal.

He added that he travelled to Eastern Equatoria to assess the security situation and he would continue to Unity, Western Bahr El Gahzal and Abyei area.

Mr. Haile said that the security threats were mere suspicions and voters turnup was overwhelming.

He observed that most voters would complete casting their ballots within the 7 polling days.
