Availability of water at some polling centres in Lakes State is a major concern and plans are underway to have all these places equipped with water supplies.

Lakes Minister of Infrastructure, Joseph Maker Madit, told Good News Radio that boreholes at some voting centres were not working while other centres did not have any water source.

Mr. Maker said that relevant stakeholders have come together to discuss the matter, including government officials and representatives from UNMIS, UNICEF and Oxfam, and decided to repair the boreholes that are not working with spare parts provided by UNICEF.

The Minister added that UNMIS was approached to provide water with the mobile tankers to polling centres

Mr. Maker further appreciated the assistance from a Canadian NGO, sourced by UNMIS Coordinator in Lakes, that donated 100 thousand dollars in spare parts and staff to repair boreholes in polling centres.

He said that lack of water at referendum centres may impact negatively on the turnout for the vote.

The Minister called upon the community to take good care of the boreholes so that they can serve them beyond the referendum.
