Two aid agencies made an appeal to the international community to transform South Sudan from a humanitarian emergency place into a viable developed state.

International Rescue Committee and Oxfam made the appeal today on the eve of South Sudan vote on self-determination.

Melinda Young, Oxfam Southern Sudan Country Director, told the press that the international community paid political attention to the region but did not address the root causes of its chronic humanitarian emergency.

Ms. Young said people needed to feel safe in order for South Sudan to progress.

Asked by SCR News what kind of investment South Sudan needed to become a viable country, Ms. Young urged sustained involvement in governance through financial, political and technical support.

Both aid agencies urged the international community to support the government of South Sudan and assist local communities with continued long term aid instead of concentrating in high political events.
