The head of the UN Mission in south Sudan today shunned those who were sceptical about the referendum held on time.

Addressing the press this afternoon, David Gressly said security in south Sudan was stable and border tension eased in the last two weeks.

Mr. Gressly called upon every element involved in the referendum to do its part to safeguard the integrity of the process, including voters, observers, polling officials and police.

Mr. Gressly also welcomed the ceasefire agreement signed last evening between the SPLA and George Athor’s insurgents.

He said the agreement granted security to the people in Jonglei state during the referendum.

Mr. Gressly reiterated the UN’s commitment and support to a peaceful and timely referendum.
