The UN handed over this afternoon to the referendum authorities the ballot papers and kits for the vote on self-determination.
UNIRED, the UN division for referenda and elections, handed 7.5 million ballot papers to the Southern Sudan Referendum Bureau at Juba Airport.Eamon O’Mordha, UNIRED Deputy Director, praised the hard work of all those who made the handover possible for the polling to start on January 9.
Mr O’Mordha clarified that the polling kits and all necessary materials were already being dispatched by air to the different referendum centres.
The ballot papers were officially handed to Chan Reec, who heads the Southern Sudan Referendum Bureau.
Justice Reec thanked the international community for its vital support, and God for performing the miracle of having all ballot material ready on time despite the bad weather in Europe, which affected air transport.
Justice Reec told Southerners that the world is watching what they are going to do during the referendum.
He urged voters not to repeat the mistakes that took place during the April elections and use the week they have to exercise their right to self-determination, even women in labour.
Voting for the Southern Sudan Referendum will start on January 9 and lasts for one full week.
