Domestic observers group presented today its report on voter registration for the referendum and said the exercise was peaceful.
Sudan Domestic Election Monitoring and Observation Programme (SuDEMOP) said voter registration concluded peacefully despite air attacks in North Aweil and intertribal clashes in Jonglei.Merekaje Lorna is SuDEMOP’s Secretary General. She said voter registration went smoothly and the referendum centre officials were well prepared on the registration procedures.
Ms. Lorna added that registration turn out was higher in urban centres that in the rural areas due to lack of voter education.
Ms Lorna urged civil society groups to go to rural areas and inform people on the vote.
She added that very few people checked if their names were correct in the registers during the exhibition period and it will pose problems during the vote.
Ms Lorna alerted for the fact that many voters lost their cards already.
SuDEMOP is the second domestic observer group to present its reports on the voter registration. Its findings were similar to the ones presented by SuNDE and SuGDE.
