Tonj South Commissioner returned from Rumbek after negotiating a truce between December 15 and January 9 to promote a peaceful environment for the referendum.

Commissioner Akec Tong Aleu told Don Bosco FM that in the Rumbek meeting it was decided to punish with death anyone who attempted or committed murder between December 15 and January 9.

Mr. Tong added that a killing was to be compensated by 51 cows.

Mr. Tong added that the new arrangement remains in place until the end of the voting to allow for a peaceful referendum by stopping cattle rustling and other forms of intertribal violence.

He added that the law will be adjusted after the vote on self-determination takes place.

Cattle raiding is common between the communities of Tonj South County in Warrap State and Cueibet County in Lakes state bringing insecurity and death to the region.
