The Deputy chairperson of Southern Sudan Human Rights Commission encouraged people to speak up on human rights issues, since they affect their lives and the society.
Biel Jok strongly expressed this view to SCR News in line with this year’s theme “let the people speak up” for the International Human Rights Day celebrated yesterday.
Mr. Jok said it was when people spoke out on human rights issues that their problems were attended to and resolved.
He assured the Commission would make sure that the Bill of Rights and other laws were respected.
While acknowledging persistent prevalence of human rights abuses in the region, Mr. Jok said there was improvement since the CPA was signed.
Mr. Jok added that the commission decided to extend the commemoration of the day to Wednesday next week, to celebrate it in Wau in an effective manner.
He mentioned that marching, dances, and speeches would mark the day.
Mr. Jok said detention without trials, arbitrary arrest, violence against women were among the common human rights abuses in Southern Sudan.
