An international government agency handed over today the Nursing and Midwifery College to train health personnel to the government of Southern Sudan.
The new college was built by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in the compound of Juba Teaching Hospital.With the official handover, GoSS Ministry of Health takes charge of the facilities, including recruitment of students.
The handover was attended by JICA Vice president Kiyoshi Kodera, GoSS representatives, UN Agencies and civil servants.
The Undersecretary with GoSS ministry of Health Olivia Lomoro said her government saw the need to train qualified nurses and midwives.
Dr. Lomoro added that it was GoSS’ priority to improve health personnel to reduce infant mortality rate that is high in southern Sudan due to unskilled workers handling child delivery.
She complained that the new college was too small and it needed dormitory facilities in order to be a national college.
