A snag on diplomatic communications between Khartoum and Cairo is delaying the voter registration process for Southern Sudanese living in Egypt.

Yesterday, the head of Southern Sudan Referendum Bureau, Chan Reec Madut, told the press that the registration was already underway for the diaspora in seven countries.

Justice Reec added that the Egyptian government did not allow yet the International Migrations Organization (IOM) to start registration in the country.

Paolino Wanawila, a member from the Southern Sudan Referendum Commission, was also present at the press conference.

Mr. Wanawila said that the registration did not start in Egypt due to improper diplomatic communications between Khartoum and Cairo.

He explained that the Commission wrote a letter to the ministry of Foreign Affairs to inform its Egyptian counterpart that IOM was tasked with conducting voter registration abroad.

Mr. Wanawila added that the communication did not reach Cairo in time.

He denied that the Government of Egypt was boycotting the registration of Southern Sudanese in the country.
