The government of Southern Sudan is hosting a two-day Commonwealth Telecommunications Conference in Juba to lobby for better communication services and referendum support.

Commonwealth nations’ representatives at the conference, including Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda and Malawi, shared experiences in order to improve telecommunication services.

GoSS minister for Telecommunications and Postal Services, Madut Bier Yel, told journalists yesterday that his government hosted the conference to seek international recognition for the referendum.

Mr. Bier said he called for the conference in order for the international community to witness preparations for the referendum and recognize its result.

The minister stressed that GoSS wanted to extend network communications to rural areas to improve the quality of life and facilitate contacts.

The conference concluded today with deliberations on the benefits and challenges of information communication technology.
