Less than one million people have registered in one third of referendum centres in south Sudan during the first week.
Southern Sudan Referendum Bureau Deputy Chairperson, Acheir Deng, told the press today in Juba that so far 891 centres out of 2623 have reported that they registered 997,121 voters during the first week, mostly in larger urban centres.Dr. Deng added that communications with referendum centres was a big challenge and only one third managed to report during the first week.
Dr. Deng apologized for registration materials shortages and long queuing in some centres.
He added that additional registration kits were supplied.
Dr. Deng reminded all southern Sudanese that they have until December 1 to register.
He urged those who registered to keep their voter cards in a safe place as they are needed to vote.
