South Sudan referendum authorities said the Egyptian government did not allow voter registration to start but a break through was expected in the coming week.
Achier Deng is the operations commissioner for southern Sudan Referendum Bureau. He told journalists today in Juba that according to International Organization for Migration (IOM) Cairo has not allowed voter registrations for unknown reasons.IOM is running registration centres in eight countries.
Mr. Deng added that registration may start next week in Cairo.
Mr. Deng said that the accreditation of observers, international and domestic, started already.
Mr. Deng said that there was a good turn out at referendum centres across is southern Sudan during the past five days.
He added that in some rural areas people complained about the great distances they had to walk in order to register.
