The head of South Sudan Referendum Bureau made yesterday a surprise visit to Torit to honour the region and check how the first day of registration went.

Justice Chan Reec Madut said he flew to Torit to witness the start of the registration in a historic town, Emmanuel Radio reported.

He added that he wanted to see if the registration process was moving freely and fairly.

Justice Reec was heading a team that included international monitors led by the consul general of the USA in Juba, Barrie Walkley,

Ambassador Walkley said the beginning of the registration was a historic day for the people of Southern Sudan to decide their own destiny.

He added that he was in Torit to witness the registration kick off.

The team also visited Kapoeta.
