The Catholic Bishops of Sudan started yesterday in Rumbek their plenary assembly with speeches from various Church officials and representatives from the local government of Lakes State.
Host bishop Caesar Mazzolari welcomed all the participants stating that they should feel at home.Bishop Mazzolari said that the entire diocese prepared for the plenary meeting with a nine-day prayer that concluded on Sunday.
Bishop Rudolf Deng Majak of Wau and president of the Sudan Catholic Bishops’ Conference (SCBC) said that the choice of Rumbek for the plenary was deliberate because of its relevance in the history of the struggle of the Sudanese people.
Bishop Deng added that Rumbek Secondary School educated prominent people, including Dr. John Garang.
The SCBC president said the bishops would release a pastoral message at the end of the plenary.
Marko Col Maciec spoke on behalf of Lakes State government. He said the local authorities expected some advice from the Bishops on weaknesses of the present government to bring about positive change and organize a free and secure referendum.
The plenary will conclude on Monday, November 15.
