The operations of the UN Mission in South Sudan or UNMISS is the most difficult in the whole world, says Special Representative of the Secretary-General.
David Shearer says UNMISS peacekeepers while protecting civilians spend more time following women to avoid abusing them as they collect firewood for their livelihoods.
He adds that UNMISS peacekeepers are sometimes turn back at checkpoints to fulfilling their duties.
Shearer urges the peacekeepers to use robust approach, be calm and suitable to the situation in the young country.
The Special Representative of the Secretary-General urges the government to enable the citizens to return to their homes for their children to go to school.
He hopes that 2017 will be the year of achieving lasting peace.
Shearer pledges that UNMISS stands ready to be a partner in peace building process.
The Special Representative was addressing International Day of UN peacekeepers in Juba under the theme: ‘Investing in peace around the world programme’.
