The United Nations rejected calls by south Sudan yesterday to send more peacekeepers to monitor the north-south border ahead of the referendum.

SPLA and SAF earlier accused one another of amassing troops along the border areas.

UN Undersecretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations, Alain le Roy told journalist that it was unrealistic for UNMIS to monitor the border areas.

Mr. Roy said that that the common border was too wide for UN soldiers to be deployed.

He added that the UN did not see any aggressions in the border either from SAF or SPLA forces.
