RUSSIAN PRESIDENT ASKS FOR SOUTH SUDAN REFERENDUM ON TIME

The Presidents of Sudan and Russia held today a telephone conversation on reconciliation in the Sudan and the Russian head of state said a timely referendum would serve the country and the region.

Dmitry Medvedev emphasised Russia’s readiness to continue working actively with Sudan within the framework of the international community’s efforts, which must be impartial, well-balanced, and based on constructive cooperation with Khartoum, the Russian Presidency said.

Mr Medvedev noted that timely referendum served the long-term interests of Sudan and the entire region.

Omar al-Bashir praised Russia’s efforts to promote a resolution to Sudan’s existing problems.

Both presidents expressed their support for strengthening trade and economic ties between Sudan and Russia and discussed specific areas of cooperation.
