ABYEI SITUATION DELICATE, SAYS MP

An Abyei representative in the Southern Sudan Legislative Assembly said the situation in the region became delicate due to the continuous settlement of Misseriya tribesmen by the Khartoum government in the area.

Arop Madut Arop told SCR News that over seventy five thousand Misseriya were settled in the north of Abyei in the hope that they would counts as residents, participate in the Abyei referendum and influence its final outcome.

Mr. Arop added that SPLM is confronting the Misseriya and no fighting will break out between the two groups.

The 2005 Comprehensive peace Agreement guarantees a simultaneous referendum in Abyei and in South Sudan on January 9, 2011. While Southerners vote for unity or independence, Abyei resident choose between belonging to the North or to the South.

Delegations from the NCP and SPLM are expected in the Ethiopian capital of Addis Ababa on Wednesday to resume talks on who qualifies to vote in the Abyei referendum and on borders of the special region.
