South Sudan launched today in Wau demobilization activities that will re-integrate 3500 ex-combatants, men and women, into civilian life.

Southern Sudan Demobilisation, Disarmament and Reintegration Commission (SSDDRC) said in a press release that in the coming weeks more than 3,500 ex-combatants and women associated with armed forces are expected to arrive in the assembly area in Wau.

The demobilisation process consists of counselling, briefings and distribution of some material support and allowances.

The former combatants will receive professional training in agriculture and small scale businesses, brick making and mechanics skills.

Since the DDR programme was launched 16 months ago, more than 8500 people left the armed forces.
