The African Union is consulting with the peace partners to prepare a second round of talks between the SPLM and the NCP on Abeyi scheduled for Addis Ababa on October 27.

Thabo Mbeki, head of the AU High Level Implementation Panel, was this morning in Juba to meet GoSS President Salva Kiir Mayardit ahead of the resumption of negotiations.

Mr. Mbeki told journalists that the panel was not part of the first round of talks sponsored by the US representative Scott Gration and wanted to be briefed before preparing the second round of negotiations.

He added that he met with the SPLM and NCP delegations to know what happened in Addis Ababa.

Mr. Mbeki said he held a meeting with vice president Ali Osman Taha and on Monday will meet president Omar al-Bashir to know what the leaderships think about the outstanding issues under negotiation.

Mr. Mbeki explained that the SPLM and NCP delegations decided to continue the talks under the AU panel mediation.

He added that the partners agreed to focus the negotiations on Abyei and other CPA outstanding matters.
