A researcher who integrated a team that studied local justice in South Sudan said traditional courts were efficient in bringing justice and peace to the communities.

Three researches working for the United States Institute of Peace and the Rift Valley Institute presented today in Juba a report on Local Justice in Southern Sudan.

Researcher Cherry Leonardi said during her presentation that traditional courts solved disputes quickly due to their procedures.

However, Dr. Leonardi said that traditional courts discriminated against women.

She added that police and other forces sometimes interfered with traditional courts in the dispensation of justice.

Dr. Leonardi explained that traditional courts adjusted to new challenges from social changes.

She added that new traditional courts emerged in some urban centres that reflected the changing times.

Most tribes in south Sudan still follow customary courts to solve cases due to the expensive procedures and corruption in government courts.
