A renegade commander who led an uprising after he lost the election for Jonglei governorship denied he received any support from Khartoum to destabilize Southern Sudan.

Dok James Puok, spokesman for Gen. George Athor, told the press yesterday in Juba that there was no link between the insurgency and the government of Sudan.

Mr. Puok stated that Mr. Athor did not accept Khartoum’s intention to use the rebellion to create insecurity in the south.

Mr. Kok explained that the white helicopter detained by SPLA in Jonglei was not from the North but hired by Mr. Athor to supply medicines to the rebelled troops since the south army did not allow humanitarian agencies into the area.

Mr. Kok added that it was time for Mr. Athor to work with the government of Southern Sudan to ensure a free, fair and credible referendum.

He added that Mr. Athor seeks to sign a peace agreement with Government of Southern Sudan before the referendum.

GoSS president Salva Kiir Mayardit issued an amnesty for Mr. Athor and other three commaders, their officers and troops for crimes against the Sudanese people.
