A GoSS minister urged citizens to encourage their relatives in the north to return home before the referendum in order to take part in the vote freely and without intimidation.

GoSS Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, Michael Makuei Lueth, made the appeal during a referendum briefing in Torit yesterday, Emmanuel Radio reported.

Mr. Makuei said conditions in the north will not be free and fair for Southerners to vote for secession and the best alternative is to urge them to come home instead of registering in the north.

He added that southerners in the north are being bought to support unity by offers of plots and money to build “tukuls”.

Mr. Makuei advised Southerners to avoid situations that endanger the smooth running of the referendum.

He added that in case the north fails to conduct the referendum or misconducts it, Southern Sudan Legislative Assembly can make a Unilateral Declaration of Independence.

Mr. Makuei urged those who advocate for unity as well as the voices for secession to campaign without violence.
