REFERENDUM BOSS ASSURES CIVIC EDUCATION

The head of Southern Sudan Referendum Bureau assured the public that civic education will be carried out during the different stages of the exercise in a bid to ensure that the process meets international standards.

Chan Reec told Good News Radio that the referendum should not to be taken as any ordinary election since through it Southerners will decide their destiny.

Mr. Reec encouraged Southerners to register and vote in the referendum expected for Januart 9, 2011, explaining that it is the turn up that validates the vote.

At least 60 percent of registered voters have to take part in the referendum for their vote to be binding.

Mr. Reec said that Southern Sudanese in East Africa can register and to vote in the countries where they are.

The Southern Sudan Referendum Act 2009 says that Southerners aged 18 and above have the right to vote in the referendum on January 9 choosing between confirmation of the unity of the Sudan by sustaining the system of governance established by the Comprehensive Peace Agreement and the Constitution, or secession.
