A workshop aimed at making teachers aware of HIV and AIDS to combat its spread kicked off in Rumbek on Tuesday.

The five-day event is an initiative of Lakes State HIV AIDS Commission in partnership with UNICEF.

Peter Gum Ater is Lakes State HIV AIDS Commission Deputy Director. He told Good News Radio that five days were not enough to exhaust the various topics on HIV and AIDS.

Mr. Gum added that similar events would be organized for traditional chiefs and other leaders.

Mr. Gum urged teachers to pass on the information on AIDS to their students.

He suggested that the churches could use Sunday prayer to spread the message about HIV and AIDS.

Risper Nyangaresi, a teacher at Rumbek Girls’ Primary, she learned about sexually transmitted infections and how to prevent them, adding that she would pass on the knowledge to her pupils.

Ms. Risper said abstinence for single and faithfulness for married was a way to stop the spread of AIDS.

She added it was not true that HIV and AIDS was brought to Sudan by foreigners.

An estimated three point eight million people are at a risk of acquiring HIV and 60 thousand have so far been tested positive.
