SPLA RELEASES ALMOST 8000 EX-COMBATANTS

The South Sudan army demobilized almost 8000 men, women and children who served in the armed forces in the region since July of last year.

The Chairman for Southern Sudan Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration Program, William Deng Deng, said in a press release that until October 8, up to 7,791 SPLA combatants were demobilized in the region.

Mr. Deng added that the demobilization was carried out in Lakes, Central Equatoria and Northern Bahr el Ghazal states and focused on elderly and disabled women and men.

He said more than 2,600 ex-combatants and women associated with armed forces from Eastern Equatoria state were expected to be integrated into civilian life in the next two months.

Another 3600 will be released in Western Bahr el GhazaL.
