South Sudan political parties started today a three-day forum under the theme “Southern Sudan United for Free, Fair and Transparent Referendum” to reach a consensus ahead of the 2011 vote on self-determination.

The twenty five political parties taking part in the forum are hosted by the ruling SPLM at the Nyakuron Cultural Centre in Juba.

GoSS president and SPLM chairperson Salva Kiir Mayardit told the participants that the future of south Sudan was greater than the interests of political parties and individuals.

Mr. Kiir urged the parties to build a consensus to guarantee fair and free referenda throughout south Sudan and Abyei for its results to be recognized by the international community.

Mr. Kiir said the forum should enlighten south Sudanese to fully understand the importance of referendum.

He added that the vote on self-determination was a once in a lifetime golden opportunity that should not be spoiled.

Osaman Taha, from the NCP, said the meeting should come up with a vital impact for Sudanese politics.

Mr. Taha confirmed irregularities and party differences during the April elections and urged the political parties to do away with the rivalry during the referendum.

The Forum is scheduled to end on Friday with resolutions on the way forward for free and fair referenda.
