UN AGENCIES PLEDGE SUPPORT FOR REFERENDUM

UN agencies operating in South Sudan promised to provide full support for the upcoming referendum to ensure its outcome is recognized by the international community.

Head of UNMIS David Gressly said today at a Women Conference in Juba that the mission and UNDP would provide technical and logistic support for a credible, free and fair referendum

Mr. Gressly said UNMIS trained Southern Sudan police to improve their skills and provide security during the exercise.

Mr. Gressly added that UNMIS planed to build referendum offices at county level to provide technical, logistical and security requirements to the popular consultation.

He said the UN provided 20 helicopters to be use in south Sudan to ferry ballot papers and other materials to the polling centres.

Mr. Gressly was speaking at the women conference aimed at enhancing gender participation in the referendum.
