A humanitarian organization said the UN Security Council’s visit to the Sudan presents a critical opportunity to focus on the oil sector as an incentive for peace.A delegation from the United Nations Security Council is in Juba since yesterday and remains in the country until the end of this week to support the promotion of peace ahead of the referendum.

Dana Wilkins, campaigner at Global Witness, said Security Council members must not waste this chance to push for the acceleration of the ongoing post-referendum negotiations on oil.

Global Witness welcomed the United Kingdom’s recent announcement that Sudan would be a top priority for its presidency of the UN Security Council in November, and called on it to make oil governance a theme of its presidency.
