The commission organizing the referendum for south Sudan’s self determination said yesterday that it agreed to allow the European Union to monitor the January vote.

Spokesman Jamal Mohammed Ibrahim told a press conference in Khartoum that the Commission signed a memorandum of understanding with the European Union to facilitate the work of their observers, AFP reported.

Mr. Mohammed said about 80 European observers were expected to monitor the vote.
The head of the EU delegation in Khartoum, Carlo De Filippi, said his organization was committed to support the referendum.

Mr. De Filippi revealed that the European Observation Mission would cover both the registration and polling periods.
