The Association for Independent Media (AIM) condemned the media assaults that took place on Friday by security personnel on a reporter covering Salva Kiir’s return from the US.

Paul Lasuba Memoscar, a SCRN reporter, was badly beaten all over his body by two policemen and one SPLA soldier. The incident took place during the event that marked the return to Juba of GoSS president Salva Kiir Mayardit on Friday.

Talking to SCR News, AIM Chaiman David Dau, said such media assaults do not portray the image of a democratic nation adding that freedom of expression for the media is not separated from democracy.

He said that without the freedom for journalists to exercise their rights, it becomes a dictatorial state.

Mr. Dau added that is unfortunate that basic principles of respecting journalists are still not heeded by the security especially those from the national security.

He called for the protection of the media as the region drives to the referendum on self-determination in January next year.

Mr. Dau said resolving such issues of journalistic integrity, safety and independence is crucial to a fair referendum and the future stability and maturing of the Sudanese society.
