Akobo County is calm apparently after civilians clashed with the Sudan Peoples’ Liberation Army SPLA during the process of disarmament this month, said the MP from Akobo in the South Sudan Legislative Assembly SSLA.
At least six civilians and more than ten SPLA were reported dead after two separate clashes this month. The civilians claimed that SPLA had used a wrong procedure of disarming them.

Talking to SCR news today, John Jock Chol said the security situation is normal in Akobo adding that the incident was a misunderstanding between the local people and the SPLA.

Mr. Chol added that the civilians blamed the SPLA for the approach used during the disarmament. The SPLA were accused for disarming the civilians before consulting with area chiefs and Payam administrators on which families or individuals are having guns.

Mr. Chol said his team explained to the civilians that SPLA has the authority to disarm any member of the community carrying a gun illegally without consulting from any one.

Mr. Chol mentioned that the community agreed to cooperate with the SPLA and submit their weapons voluntarily which has brought about the current calm security situation prevailing in the area.
