The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization or FAO on Tuesday revived central cold chain with the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries Industry in Gudele, Juba County.
In a statement, FAO says the cold chain is crucial for the storage, safe transportation and performance of temperature for sensitive livestock vaccines.
The cold chain system keeps vaccines at recommended temperature, ranging from +20 Celsius to +80 Celsius from the manufacturer all the way to cattle camps in remote areas.
The statement explains that if the vaccines are not kept in refrigerators throughout transportation, they can no longer be effective.
FAO Representative in South Sudan Serge Tissot says FAO and government worked hard to re-establish the central cold chain to get vaccines to all parts of the country.
The Representative discloses that FAO procured cold chain equipment, spare parts and special refrigeration tools for over 1 million US Dollars in 2015 alone.
The statement says South Sudan has 167 cold chain units with central cold chain in Juba, Gudele area and three other main cold chain hubs in Wau, Rumbek and Torit.
