United Nations Refugee Agency or UNHCR amidst difficult roads in South Sudan has stockpiled relief supplies for 238 thousand refugees before the onset of the rainy season in May when roads are expected to be impassable.
The agency in a statement says it has dispatched 117 trucks from Juba to hard-to-reach areas in Unity and Upper Niles States to provide basic needs of Sudanese refugees and save it from expensive expenditure on airlifts.
UNHCR Representative in South Sudan Ahmed Warsame says “Pre-positioning is the most effective way to ensure a timely humanitarian response to those who are most in need during times of crisis”.
The supplies among other items include mosquito nets, blankets and plastic sheets meant to save lives.
The agency adds that despite the ongoing conflict and volatile security, it has delivered 57 trucks safely to Pariang County in Unity State and 42 others have reached Upper Nile’s Maban County.
These two areas alone host six refugee camps and 90 percent of South Sudan’s refugee population.
