A baby girl of about eight hours old mysteriously disappeared in Save the Children’s run Nimule County Hospital Maternity Ward on January 23.
Candia Rukia, a 35-year-old delivered a baby girl at around 6:30 PM on Thursday, but her baby vanished at 2:00 AM on Friday, Radio Emmanuel reported.
She told the press that a middle aged lady entered the postnatal room in the maternity ward at around midnight, pretending to be sick but later disappeared.
Rukia said she was deep asleep when the incident happened, only to wake up and found her baby missing and the woman who laid in the next bed.
The mother of seven had no attendant to look after her and the nurses on duty were not present at the time the stranger entered the bed of the hospital ward.
Nimule Police Investigator Corporal Amin Joseph said no serious suspect was linked to the stealing of the baby and that police recorded statements from four nurses on duty that night and two other women linked to business of buying a baby.
He noted that the police are still gathering information for possible lead into the suspect believed to have expressed intention to buy a baby.
Nimule town Clerk David Eriga observed that the suspect could have sneaked the baby through the gate as the hospital has only one outlet.
Save the Children Country representative Peter Walsh said they informed Ugandan and South Sudanese authorities as the facility is very close to the border.
He disclosed that their organization is also supporting ongoing investigations into the loss of the baby.
Mr Walsh said the Hospital is supporting the mother who lost her baby and the immediate family during this critical moment.
