A team of political and religious leaders in Eastern Equatoria State of South Sudan and Kaabong District of Uganda called for disarmament in the region.
The leaders last week during their cross-border peace dialogue at Kidepo National Game Park resolved disarming pastoral communities in Kenya, South Sudan, Ethiopia and Uganda for peace to prevail in the region, Radio Emmanuel reported.
Mitigating poaching, cross border raiding and illicit trade through sensitization and continuous dialogue are other resolutions of the conference.
Eastern Equatoria Peace Commission Chairperson, Suleiman Claudio Liling and Kaabong Resident District Commissioner, Simon Lolim represented the two governments in the dialogue.
The conference also observed that illegal firearms be eliminated in the region by creating disarmament policies, curtailing political influence and enacting strong laws as they are factors influencing criminal activities such as cattle raiding, poaching, road side attacks and trade on illicit commodities.
Torit Catholic Diocese Vicar General Monsignor Arkangelo Lokoro and Fr Largo Koryang represented religious leaders in the cross border conference.
Fr Raphael Lobeere, heading Kotido Diocese Peace and Justice Department and his Torit counterpart, Fr John Opi Severino, said the dialogue aimed at building peace.
The conference was organized by Peace and Justice Commission department of the Catholic of Torit and Kotido Dioceses, funded by AMECEA through Caritas.
