Western Bahr El Ghazal State education ministry and non-governmental organisation Save the Children on Friday celebrated World Literacy Day under the theme ‘A literate community can develop and prosper.’
Acting state education minister Isaac Cleto Hassan reminded citizens in Wau Stadium that literacy rate in South Sudan is very low, Voice of Hope reported.
He urged development partners to join hands with government to improve the education sector in the country.
Mr Cleto reiterated that a country can only be developed through education.
Save the Children Representative Pasquale Thomas said the organisation is committed to support all schools within and outside state.
He disclosed that the organisation is supporting 12 schools of Jur River County through rehabilitation, construction and training of Parents and Teachers’ Association or PTA.
Director-General Abdulai Ali Abdullah lamented that there is only one literacy centre in the state.
Deputy Governor Joseph Garang described illiteracy as sickness in South Sudan, requiring joint effort from government and local communities.
World Literacy Day is marked on September 8 every year.
