The European Union or EU Delegation and Heads of Mission of Member States in South Sudan expressed concerns over increasing media restrictions on freedom of expression in South Sudan, urging the government to end intimidation, harassment and censorship.

In a statement last Friday, the Union noted with particular concern over the recent closure of Bakhita Radio and the detention of its News Editor Ocen David Nicholas.

The statement added that EU firmly opposes any restrictions on media’s ability to operate freely.

It underlined the importance of free and independent media as a cornerstone of an open and democratic society.

The Union said free flow of information supports transparency and accountability, and encourages inclusive exchange of views valuable in South Sudan at the time of conflict.
