United Nations Mission in South Sudan or UNMISS Police new mandate focuses on civilians’ protection, monitoring and investigating human rights’ violation as acclaimed by UN Security Council following mid December, 2013 crisis in South Sudan.

UNMISS Police Commissioner Frederick Yiga told the press on Thursday in Juba that the new mandate would not cater for South Sudan National Police Service’ capacity building as it used to be.

He explained that the new assignment strengthens coordination and cooperation with the National Police to ensure protecting civil population from violence.

Mr Yiga added that UN Police would monitor and investigate violations of human rights without compromise.

The Police Commissioner cited shifting to the new mandate as a challenge for the National General Inspector of Police to perceive.

Mr Yiga added that establishing communication between civilians in protection sites and UN Police for confidence and trust building would be another challenge.

He hopes civilians in UNMISS protection sites would build trust in UN Police as time goes by.

The Police Commissioner explained that their coordination with National Police would ensure display of professional and practical knowledge of policing to defend police uniform.
