National government and Legislative Assembly are studying strategies to widen tax base by improving collection of non-oil revenues to save the country’s economy from inflation and subsequent collapse.

Assembly Information and Communication Chairperson Thomas Wani Kundu made the revelation to press after a closed door presentation of 15 pages’ paper by Vice President James Wani Igga on how to improve non-oil revenues collection.

He explained that after studying inflation rate closely they would add Value Added Tax to commodities to attract investors and increase income levels.

Mr Wani said the government would eliminate untouchable army generals pocketing revenues at checkpoints by replacing them with qualified accountants to remit money directly to the Central Bank.

He added that time already came for illegal tax officials’ adjustment to leave the positions for competent personnel.

The lawmaker observed that such changes would take more time to implement.
