United Nations or UN Envoy visited Ethiopia and met 170 thousand South Sudanese seeking refuge in the western part of the country, lamenting that she was “unprepared” for the suffering.
In a statement, Princess Haya Bint Al Hussein said the fact that refugee emergency is still unfolding hits her hard.
She spent her Tuesday time in the muddy Kule 2 camp with refugee children and mothers.
The statement added that one thousand refugees arrive each day to join the 170 thousand already in Ethiopia.
Gambella region alone was already hosting 59 thousand South Sudanese in camps and host communities before the conflict.
UNHCR’s Senior Emergency Coordinator in Gambella Oscar Mundia said one of the most compelling aspects of the crisis is that the majority of refugees are women and children, all relying on aid agencies for food and other services.
He lamented that a shortfall in funding would mean catastrophic consequences.
